First baseman James Loney finalized a three-year, $21 million contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Rays announced the deal Friday. It is the largest contract the Rays have given a free agent since the Stuart Sternberg-led ownership group bought the team after the 2005 season.
Loney led the club with a .299 batting average in 2013. He also had 13 home runs and 75 RBIs in 158 games.
He led the major leagues with a club-record .351 road batting average.
The 29-year-old has a .285 career average with 86 home runs and 534 RBIs in eight seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and Rays.
