Chris Stewart was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates from the New York Yankees, who will receive a player to be named later in return.

Stewart was one of five catchers on the 40-man roster for the Yankees after they signed free agent Brian McCann.

Stewart batted .211 with four home runs and 25 RBI in 109 games with the Yankees in 2013. He was acquired from the San Francisco Giants on April 4, 2012 in exchange for right-handed pitcher George Kontos.

To create a spot on the 40-man roster, the Pirates designated catcher Michael McKenry for assignment.
