Hair is more important than fame or money to pitcher Brian Wilson, it appears.
Although the New York Yankees have apparently shown interest in acquiring the Los Angeles Dodgers, Wilson does not appear willing to part with his trademark shoulder-length hair and ZZ Top-style beard, according to a report by CBSSports.com.
The Yankees have team rules in effect for several decades that limit the length of a player’s hair and facial hair, as well.
But this is also the same Brian Wilson who previously turned down $1 million to shave his beard for charity.
Wilson, who came back from a second Tommy John surgery to pitch this season for the Dodgers after previously being with the San Francisco Giants, was nothing short of outstanding.
In 24 games, Wilson allowed just one run in 19.1 innings of work in both the regular season and postseason. In addition, his fastball was consistently around 95 mph, and his slider was as wicked as it has ever been.
So, it appears the Yankees will continue their search to fill the void left by the retirement of Mariano Rivera, not to mention Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman’s reluctance of using setup man David Robertson in a closer’s role in 2014.
The CBS report indicated that Cashman may now turn his attention to free agents Joe Nathan and Grant Balfour with Wilson likely out of the picture now.
