South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier confirmed Wednesday that backup Dylan Thompson will replaced injured Connor Shaw as the starting quarterback for Saturday’s Southeastern Conference game against Missouri.
But Spurrier did not rule Shaw out of the game, saying it is possible that Shaw could serve as the backup.
“(Shaw) may be able to dress and get back up, we don’t know,” Spurrier said, according to GoGamecocks.com. “But Dylan is definitely going to start the game, and it’ll be his game to go with.”
Thompson, a redshirt junior, will make his third career start when the fifth-ranked Tigers (7-0) come to Columbia, S.C. He is no stranger to big games, having led the Gamecocks to a win over Clemson in the final game of the 2012 regular season and throwing the winning touchdown pass against Michigan in the Outback Bowl.
“It’s time to let Dylan show what he can do,” Spurrier said.
Shaw sprained a knee late in South Carolina’s SEC loss to Tennessee last Saturday and is limited in practice this week.
