Texas quarterback David Ash is questionable for Saturday’s game against No. 25 Mississippi.

The Associated Press is reporting Ash’s status might be a game-time decision after he suffered head and shoulder injuries during last Saturday’s 40-21 loss to BYU.

Texas coach Mack Brown said Wednesday if Ash can’t play, senior Case McCoy will start and freshman Tyrone Swoopes will be his backup. McCoy has appeared in 21 games in his career with six starts.

“The guys trust Case. There won’t be panic if David’s not out there,” Brown said.

Ash left the field with head and shoulder injuries after being tackled in the fourth quarter against BYU. Through two games, he passed for 594 yards and leads the team with 125 yards rushing.

The Texas medical staff will continue to evaluate Ash through the week. Brown said he could play, even if he doesn’t practice this week.

Texas (1-1) is already without top playmaker Daje Johnson against Mississippi (2-0). Johnson scored two touchdowns in the first game, but was injured early against BYU when his ankle twisted under a defender. Brown hasn’t said when Johnson will return.
