The Chicago White Sox traded outfielder Alex Rios to the Texas Rangers on Friday.
The White Sox are also sending $1 million to the Rangers toward Rios’ salary.
The White Sox will receive a player to be named later. The player is believed to be shortstop Leury Garcia, according to ESPN.
Texas claimed Rios off waivers Thursday.
Rios is making $12 million this year and is due $13 million next season. He also has a $2 million buyout for 2015. He has a no-trade clause but the Rangers were not on his no-trade list.
The two teams also discussed making a trade at the July 31 non-waiver deadline but could not reach a deal.
Texas was looking for a right-handed-hitting outfielder after losing Nelson Cruz to a 50-game suspension due to the Biogenesis scandal.
Rios is batting .277 with 12 home runs and 55 RBI this season.
Chicago will look to find playing time for outfielder prospect Avisail Garcia now that Rios is gone. The White Sox got Garcia from the Detroit Tigers in the three-team trade that sent right-hander Jake Peavy to the Boston Red Sox on July 30.
White Sox general manager Rick Hahn has said he wants Garcia to play on the major league roster if there is an opportunity for him to play regularly. That opportunity may have arrived. Garcia is 10-for-24 with a home run and nine RBI at Class AAA Charlotte with 10 hits in 24 at-bats.
