The Washington Nationals acquired outfielder Scott Hairston from the Chicago Cubs for Class A pitcher Ivan Pineyro, according to multiple reports.
Fox Sports was first to report the trade. CBS Sports confirmed that Pineyro was part of the deal.
The Nationals will pay Hairston’s contract and performance bonuses this year, while the Cubs will pay less than $500,000 next year.
Hairston, 33, is batting .163 in 111 plate appearances. He is a career .244 hitter in 10 major-league seasons. He can play all three outfield positions. He is expected to help the Nationals most against left-handed pitching.
Pineyro, 21, has a 3.24 ERA with an 8.3 strikeouts per 9 innings average and 3.27 strikeouts-per-walk ratio in 77 2/3 innings over 15 starts. He is ranked as the Nationals’ No. 27 prospects by Baseball America.
