Golden State Warriors forward Carl Landry opted out of the final year of his contract on Wednesday and is now an unrestricted free agent.
The six-year forward played an integral role for the Warriors as they made the playoffs last season for the first time since 2007. Landry averaged 10.8 points and six rebounds as one of the Warriors’ top reserves.
Landry told the San Jose Mercury News it was a tough decision, and that it was a battle between his heart and his head.
His heart said stay with Golden State.
“Best season I’ve probably ever experienced,” Landry said of last season as the Warriors reached the Western Conference semifinals.
But his head, and his agent, said opt out.
“(The Warriors) knew it was essentially a one-year deal when he signed,” said his agent Mark Bartelstein. “They got him at below market value.”
The Warriors signed Landry to a two-year deal worth $8 million per year.
