Pirates’ Burnett goes on DL with calf strain

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed right-hander A.J. Burnett on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right calf, the team announced Thursday.

Burnett was scratched from a Friday start against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Left-hander Jeff Locke (5-1) is slated to take Burnett’s place. Pirates starter Wandy Rodriguez also is on the disabled list with a forearm injury

The Pirates did not say how Burnett was injured. Hr pitched 8 1/3 innings against the Chicago Cubs last Saturday and gave up two runs and four hits en route to a win.

Burnett has made 14 starts this season and gone 4-6 with a 3.12 ERA in 89 1/3 innings. The former New York Yankees pitcher was 16-10 with a 3.51 ERA last season in his first year with the Pirates.
