Redshirt freshman quarterback Everett Golson, who led Notre Dame to an undefeated regular season in 2012, and then to the BCS title game against Alabama is no longer enrolled at the university.
Rumors on social media outlets started to swirl late Saturday and the university confirmed Golson was no longer at the school.
“Everett is not enrolled at the university. Federal law and our own polices preclude us from discussing specifics,” school spokesman Dennis Brown told South Bend (Ind.) television station WNDU-TV.
Golson started 11 games for the Fighting Irish last season. Golson completed 58.8 percent of his passes. He threw for 2,405 yards and 12 touchdowns, along with six interceptions.
The Fighting Irish have three quarterbacks on their roster. With 18 starts, senior Tommy Rees has the most experience. Rees played in all 12 games last season.
Andrew Hendrix, a fourth-year junior and Malik Zaire, a spring enrollee, are also on the roster.
Earlier this spring, Gunner Kiel transferred to Cincinnati.
