The struggling Los Angeles Dodgers do not plan to fire Don Mattingly, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The Dodgers came into the season with high expectations after making a blockbuster trade late last year and significantly adding to their payroll, but are off to a sluggish 17-25 start.
The Dodgers have a league-record $220 million payroll this year.
The Dodgers were swept by the San Francisco Giants two weeks ago and to the host Atlanta Braves over the weekend, leading to speculation that Mattingly’s job is at stake.
Mattingly is in the final year of his contract. A club official told the Times on Sunday night that the team does not plan to let go of Mattingly before the team returns from its road trip Thursday.
If the Dodgers fire Mattingly, candidates to replace him at least on an interim basis include third-base coach Tim Wallach, first-base coach Davey Lopes, and former major-league major Pat Corrales. The 72-year-old Corrales was hired to work in the Dodgers front office in the offseason.
