Former Cleveland Browns kicker Phil Dawson has agreed to terms of a one-year contact with the San Francisco 49ers, the team announced Tuesday evening.
Dawson, 38, spent the first 14 seasons of his NFL career with the Browns. Last season was arguably the best of his career as he was a perfect 27-for-27 on field goals of more than 40 yards, including 7-for-7 from 50 yards and beyond.
Dawson missed only two field goals all season, going 29-for-31, and was named to the AFC Pro Bowl team for the second time.
“We are excited to add an accomplished veteran like Phil to our team,” said 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke. “Phil has performed at a high level throughout his career and has a lot of experience managing the elements, which is a valuable asset.”
Dawson will replace former 49ers place kicker David Akers, who was released after last season. Akers converted just 29 of 42 attempts in 2012-13, including only nine of 19 from 40 yards or more.
“I am humbled & thrilled to have the opportunity to continue my career with my new team, the SF 49ers,” Dawson wrote from his Twitter account Tuesday.
