The Buffalo Bills announced on Monday that cornerback Leodis McKelvin signed a contract extension.
The two sides agreed to the deal on Saturday. Fox Sports reported that it is a four-year, $20 million contract, making him the highest-paid returner. He is guaranteed $7.5 million.
McKelvin said he is glad to stay in Buffalo.
“This was the only offer I was really looking into,” he said. “They did a good job of coming after me and did a good job of doing it before the deadline of whenever the teams could talk to me. Buffalo was always the place I wanted to be. Like I said, I have my nephews and my brother up here. They are in school and he is working. It was like a no-brainer for me to come back.”
Coach Doug Marrone said in a statement that he looks forward to having McKelvin back with the team.
“Obviously, he is one of the most exciting kick returners in the game today, but we’re also counting on him to be very competitive for the starting corner position opposite Stephon Gilmore. We feel he could play an important role in our defense moving forward.”
McKelvin said, “I see myself being able to go out there and compete for the starting spot. Contracts say what they say, but I am just going out there competing, doing what I have to do to compete and make this team be better.”
McKelvin started four games at cornerback and 13 overall in 2012. He averaged an NFL-high 18.7 yards per punt return and 28.3 yards on kickoff returns.
