The Pittsburgh Pirates dramatically changed the parameters of the two-year, $12.75 million contract it gave to left-hander Francisco Liriano after it was revealed how Liriano broke his non-throwing arm in the offseason.
Liriano told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Monday that he broke his right arm when he accidentally slammed it against a door while trying to startle his kids on Christmas.
It was reported by Dominican Republic newspaper El Caribe in January that Liriano broke the arm while falling in his bathroom.
When the Pirates found out — before it was revealed to the public Monday — how Liriano really broke his arm, they changed the terms of the contract so that only $1 million is guaranteed. He still has a chance to make the rest of the money back in incentives and if the second year of the deal is vested.
Liriano also said that he needs another month of rehab before he can throw off a mound.
