The Pittsburgh Pirates’ deal with left-hander Francisco Liriano could be on hold because of an injury to his non-throwing arm, according to multiple reports.
The extent of the problem isn’t know, but his right arm apparently was hurt in late December. The injury kept Liriano from coming to Pittsburgh from his home in the Dominican Republic for a physical required before signing a contract.
Earlier in the month, Liriano and the Pirates reportedly had reached agreement on a two-year, $12.75 million contract.
General manager Neal Huntington told reporters that discussions are continuing with Liriano’s representatives, “but there is nothing to announce at this time.” There are indications that the Pirates may be attempting to negotiate new terms.
The 29-year-old Liriano posted a 6-12 record with a 5.34 ERA for the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins last season. The Pirates had targeted him for a spot in the middle of their starting rotation.
