Aaron Murray isn’t ready to leave Georgia, even with the looming possibility of being one of the top picks in the 2013 draft.
The junior quarterback led the Bulldogs to a win in the Capital One Bowl on New Year’s Day and indications from the team were that the nation’s second-leading passer would be back in Athens for his senior season. Only Alabama junior AJ McCarron, who is also returning for 2013, had a more efficient season.
On Sunday, Murray said via Twitter: “Blessed to be the QB for the Dawgs. Not ready to leave just yet. Time to get back to work & help lead this team to a championship #GoDawgs.”
Last year, it was Southern Cal quarterback Matt Barkley fans and scouts were watching. Barkley called a press conference, complete with the pep band, to say he’d be playing college football in 2012. Other top-ranked junior passers have gone a similar path, including Sam Bradford and Matt Leinart.
One factor for Murray might’ve been his grade from the NFL draft advisory board. He said last week he received a “2nd-3rd round” grade.
Former NFL head coach Tony Dungy said in December that he would draft Murray No. 1 overall if he was taking a quarterback first in 2013. The draft is considered weak at the position.
