New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, already out of the postseason with a fractured left ankle, has opted to have surgery on Saturday, with an expected recovery time of four to five months.
Barring no setbacks, Jeter should return for the start of spring training.
Dr. Robert Anderson. will perform the procedure in Charlotte, N.C.
Jeter, 36, sustained the injury while trying to make a diving ball in the 12th inning of the Game 1 of the American League Championship Series against the Detroit Tigers. He dove to his left for a ball off the bat of Jhonny Peralta, then twisted his ankle as he crumbled to the ground.
