Arizona: OF Adam Eaton, the Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year, started in center field and hit leadoff after his contract was purchased from Class AAA Reno. He replaced CF Chris Young, who was forced to leave Monday’s game because of a right quadriceps injury. … SS Willie Bloomquist returned to Phoenix to receive an injection to relieve the pain in his lower back. Bloomquist had a pinch-hit single Monday in his first at-bat since Aug. 8.

Atlanta: RHP Julio Teheran and RHP Cory Gearrin were called up now that their season at Class AAA Gwinnett (Lawrenceville, Ga.) is over. Both will be in the bullpen, manager Fredi Gonzalez said, unless they’re needed for a start because of extenuating circumstances. … C Brian McCann (right shoulder) was out of the lineup for the third straight day. McCann got a cortisone shot in the shoulder Saturday.

Chicago: LHP Chris Rusin was called up from Class AA (Kodak) Tennessee to start Tuesday night. The Cubs also recalled C Anthony Recker and RHPs Rafael Dolis and Jaye Chapman from Tennessee. The organization moved several players from Class AAA (Des Moines) Iowa to Tennessee because Iowa’s weekend games, scheduled for New Orleans, were wiped out by Hurricane Isaac. … 3B Josh Vitters was out of the lineup again after going 0-for-3 Monday and 0-for-21 over his previous eight games. His average had fallen to .081.

Cincinnati: 1B Joey Votto (left knee surgery) was activated from the disabled list but was not in the starting lineup. Manager Dusty Baker said Votto will likely start today’s game. … RF Jay Bruce hit his 30th home run Monday. He went into Tuesday needing three more home runs to top his total the previous season for the fifth straight year. He hit 21, 22, 25 and 32 before this season.

Colorado: RHP Rob Scahill and 1B/OF Matt McBride were recalled from Class AAA Colorado Springs. Scahill, 25, went 9-11 with a 5.68 ERA in Class AAA, and McBride, 27, hit .344 with 10 homers and 87 RBI. … RHP Alex White starts tonight in search of his first win in 12 starts. He has failed to pitch into the fifth inning in six straight starts.

Houston: RHP Edger Gonzalez, who on Monday got his first victory since April 2008, describes himself as a remade pitcher from his time with the Diamondbacks, where he spent the bulk of his career. He has switched from a power pitcher focused on his fastball and slider to more changeups and curveballs. … 1B Brett Wallace was buoyed by his three hits Monday, including a home run against Pirates LHP Jeff Locke. “The next step for me is to do it every day and to be able to do it against lefties,” he said.

Los Angeles: RH reliever Javy Guerra (strained left side) was placed on the disabled list, and RH reliever Josh Wall was recalled from Class AAA Albuquerque. Guerra missed a month earlier in the season after arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. … SS Hanley Ramirez’s home run Monday was his ninth in his last 18 games. He had 10 home runs in 38 games since joining the Dodgers, double the second-place home run hitter during that span (RF Andre Ethier, five).

Miami: Manager Ozzie Guillen said he is considering reactivating his Twitter account. Why? “I’m bored,” he said. … RH reliever Tom Koehler said the last week of the season at Class AAA New Orleans was the most difficult of his pro career because of Hurricane Isaac. The storm forced the Zephyrs to move a four-game home series to Round Rock, Texas, and cancel the final four games of the year in New Orleans. They ended the season with a seven-game losing streak. “Guys were worried about the flooding. It was kind of tough to focus on baseball,” he said.

Milwaukee: RHP Mike Fiers is having a strong rookie season but hasn’t fared well against Miami, basically his hometown team (he lives in Pompano Beach). In two starts against the Marlins, he is 0-2 with a 5.06 ERA. … LF Ryan Braun (96) and 3B Aramis Ramirez (89) had combined to drive in 185 runs going into Tuesday. That was the most of any teammates in the National League.

New York: 3B David Wright is “extremely optimistic” he will be able to work out a long-term deal with the Mets, he told cbssports.com. Mets GM Sandy Alderson indicated recently the club would like to keep Wright and RHP R.A. Dickey past next season, when the team holds club options on both players. … RHP Jenrry Mejia and RHP Jeurys Familia were two of seven September call-ups, and manager Terry Collins said both would get a chance to make at least one start before the end of the season.

Philadelphia: OF Nate Schierholtz, who just came off the disabled list after recovering from a fractured right big toe, was in the lineup for the first time since Aug. 11. In the 32 games since the Phillies traded OFs Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence, they have used 32 outfield combinations. … OF Domonic Brown was in the lineup for the second straight game after missing seven of eight starts because of left knee soreness.

Pittsburgh: LF Starling Marte (strained right side) began a rehab assignment with short-season State College (University Park, Pa.). The plan is for Marte to play one game at State College, then join Class AAA Indianapolis today for the start of its playoff series against Charlotte. … RH reliever Chad Qualls (right big toe) began his rehab assignment with Indianapolis on Monday and struck out all three batters he faced, including Cincinnati 1B Joey Votto, also on rehab.

St. Louis: RHP Chris Carpenter (shoulder surgery) threw 51 pitches to Cardinals hitters and called it “a good day.” Carpenter, who still hopes to pitch this season, is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday and then face hitters again Monday. … RF Carlos Beltran (left knee) was out of the lineup for the second straight day, but manager Mike Matheny said there’s a chance Beltran will be able to play today.

San Diego: RHP Andrew Cashner, who hasn’t made a major league start since July 3 because of a latissimus dorsi strain, will start Friday’s game. Cashner made three rehab starts with Class AAA Tucson before the end of the Pacific Coast League season, going 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA. … RH closer Huston Street rejoined the Padres on Monday, but when he will be able to pitch again is unknown. He tweaked his left calf strain while running on Thursday.

San Francisco: RH reliever Jean Machi, 30, made his big-league debut Monday with a perfect ninth inning. Machi, who has spent 11 seasons in the minors, was the closer at Class AAA Fresno. … IF Emmanuel Burriss, who had been designated for assignment in late July and then went to Class AAA Fresno when he cleared waivers, was among three call-ups. To make room on the 40-man roster, RH reliever Eric Hacker — another recent call-up — was designated for assignment.

Washington: CF Bryce Harper was out of lineup for a day of rest. Manager Davey Johnson also said that RF Jayson Werth will get a day off tonight. … RF Michael Morse was back in the lineup one day after he taken out of the game because of a sore right thumb. … OF Corey Brown was recalled from Class AAA Syracuse, where he hit .285 with 25 homers and 71 RBI.
