GAME BREAKDOWN
KEY MATCHUP: Northwestern will face a particularly balanced and challenging defense Saturday, as Iowa ranks second in the conference in scoring defense, allowing an average of 18.6 points per game, and second in total defense, surrendering just 283.7 yards per game. The Hawkeyes also rank second in the conference in rush defense, allowing 86.2 yards per game on the ground, and are tied for third in interceptions with 12. The Wildcats will need a very sound and well-executed offensive game plan to move the ball consistently against the Hawkeyes.
DRAFT SLANT
–QB Clayton Thorson has started 48-consecutive games for Northwestern, which ranks second among active FBS quarterbacks behind Washington’s Jake Browning. Thorson hasn’t been particularly flashy during his senior campaign, but has managed games well, limiting mistakes and turnovers while making big plays in clutch situations. Thorson’s game-management and durability, along with his physical stature, will likely land him a spot on an NFL roster following the 2019 draft.
ROSTER REPORT:
–S Jared McGee suffered an undisclosed lower body injury midway through the loss to Notre Dame and did not return. Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald did not elaborate on the nature or extent of McGee’s injury, but described his status as “doubtful” for Saturday.
–CB Trae Williams also suffered an undisclosed lower body injury against Notre Dame, and his status for Saturday’s game at Iowa is also doubtful. If the Wildcats are down two starters in the secondary, it could be difficult for them to keep Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley in check.
