Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer returned to the lineup for Saturday’s matchup against visiting Oklahoma State and threw for the winning touchdown with seven seconds left in the Bears’ 35-31 victory.
Brewer was cleared to play after passing the concussion protocol Friday, the Waco Tribune-Herald reported.
However, the Bears elected to start junior quarterback Jalen McClendon in the game while Brewer watched from the sidelines while in uniform.
Brewer entered in the fourth quarter and was 4-of-8 passing for 56 yards and two touchdowns and added 28 yards on six carries.
Brewer was injured in a 58-14 loss at No. 13 West Virginia on Oct. 25. He had his worst game of the season in the blowout by the Mountaineers, completing 1 of 8 passes for 22 yards and throwing three interceptions before he exited with the injury.
–Wisconsin quarterback Alex Hornibrook’s return to the lineup did not last long.
Hornibrook was knocked out of the Badgers’ game against Rutgers on Saturday because of a head injury. He took a big hit before halftime and was ruled out for the second half.
It was the first game back for Hornibrook, who sat out last weekend’s loss at Northwestern due to a concussion. He was cleared from the concussion protocol Friday.
Hornibrook struggled against the one-win Scarlet Knights in the opening half Saturday and finished 7 of 16 for 92 yards. He was intercepted twice and sacked once.
Jack Coan, who started in place of Hornibrook against Northwestern, took over in the second half against Rutgers.
–Minnesota running back Shannon Brooks will not face formal charges for allegedly assaulting his roommate last month.
Brooks was arrested Oct. 14 on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic assault but a lack of evidence led to the decision not to pursue charges against the senior.
“After reviewing the evidence, the City Attorney’s Office has declined to charge Mr. Brooks,” a spokeswoman for the office emailed the Minneapolis Star Tribune. “There is insufficient evidence to prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt.”
–Houston received a boost for Saturday night’s clash against SMU with the return of All-American defensive tackle Ed Oliver to the lineup.
Oliver sat out last week’s 57-36 victory over South Florida because of a right knee injury he suffered against Navy on Oct. 20.
Because Oliver is expected to be among the top picks in the 2019 NFL Draft, there was some speculation that he would not play the remainder of the season for fear of injury, following the path of Ohio State star defensive lineman Nick Bosa.
