Ohio State names QB Kyle McCord starter at Indiana

Kyle McCord will start at quarterback for No. 3 Ohio State in Saturday’s season opener at Indiana.

Buckeyes coach Ryan Day made the call on Tuesday, adding that Devin Brown will also take snaps against the Hoosiers.

McCord, a junior, and Brown, a sophomore, have battled throughout the offseason to replace C.J. Stroud.

“Kyle has done a great job over the last two weeks of showing consistency,” Day said. “He’s played very well in practice. But Devin has also shown throughout the body of the preseason that he deserves to play. We have confidence in both of them.

“I think that’s significant that we have two guys that we feel confident playing in the game. This is a little bit uncharted territory for me, but you just go on what you see every day in practice.”

McCord has completed 41 of 58 passes (70.7 percent) for 606 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in 12 games over the past two seasons.

Brown played a total of 15 snaps in two games in 2022. He has not attempted a pass.

The Houston Texans drafted Stroud with the No. 2 overall pick in April. He passed for 3,688 yards, 41 touchdowns and just six interceptions for the 11-2 Buckeyes last season.
