Not only did the Oregon Ducks (5-3, 2-3 Pac-12) get upset by Arizona 44-15 for their second straight loss, but on Monday Ducks head coach Mario Cristobal confirmed that starting quarterback Justin Herbert and star receiver Dillon Mitchell are both undergoing concussion protocol.
It means the status for both players is uncertain for Saturday’s game against UCLA in Eugene, Ore., which will mark the return of Bruins coach Chip Kelly to Autzen Stadium.
Herbert, projected to be a first-round NFL draft choice, had one of his worst games as a starter against the Wildcats, completing 24 of 48 passes for 186 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
Cristobal did not know when Herbert sustained the injury.
If Herbert cannot play, freshman Tyler Shough might make his first start for the Ducks. Sophomore Braxton Burmeister replaced Herbert last season when Herbert was injured, but Burmeister had knee surgery recently.
Mitchell left earlier in the game after taking a hard hit near the sideline. He leads the team in receptions (48) and receiving yards (677), and he had six catches for 69 yards and a touchdown against Arizona before the injury.
–Iowa cornerbacks Matt Hankins and Trey Creamer have been suspended for this week’s game against Purdue after being cited for disorderly conduct.
Hankins and Creamer received citations for noise complaints and disorderly conduct from the Iowa City Police Department related to a house party on early Sunday morning in Iowa City.
Neither player will be permitted to participate in any football activities during the suspension.
Hankins and Creamer didn’t travel with the team for Iowa’s 30-24 loss at Penn State on Saturday.
–Baylor starting quarterback Charlie Brewer is in concussion protocol, leaving his status uncertain for Saturday’s game against Oklahoma State.
Brewer suffered the injury during the Bears’ loss to West Virginia on Thursday, head coach Matt Rhule said.
Brewer, a sophomore, has been the starter during Big 12 play, but he played the worst game of his career on Thursday, completing just one of his eight passes for 22 yards with three interceptions.
Senior Jalan McClendon, who had shared the quarterback position with Brewer during nonconference play, finished the game, completing 16 of 21 passes for 183 yards in an eventual 58-14 loss.
