Rays sign LHP Jake Diekman to major league contract

The Tampa Bay Rays signed veteran left-hander Jake Diekman to a major league contract on Wednesday.

Terms were not disclosed but multiple outlets reported it was a one-year deal for the 36-year-old reliever.

Diekman, released Saturday by the Chicago White Sox, is 0-1 with a 7.94 ERA in 13 appearances this season.

He is 25-30 with a 3.96 ERA in 612 career relief appearances with seven teams.

Diekman’s arrival comes two days after lefty Garrett Cleavinger landed on the injured list with a torn ACL.

To make room for Diekman, the Rays designated right-hander Chase Anderson for assignment.

Anderson, 35, allowed two hits in five scoreless innings (two appearances) with Tampa Bay.
