Philadelphia 76ers rookie guard Jared McCain was hospitalized overnight after taking a hard fall in Wednesday night’s preseason game against the Brooklyn Nets.

The team released a statement Thursday saying that McCain was discharged early that morning and was at home resting.

“He will be further evaluated later today and an update will be provided as appropriate,” the team said.

NBA insider Chris Haynes reported that McCain experienced pulmonary contusions in the fall and is being tested for a concussion.

With about four minutes remaining in the Sixers’ 117-95 victory, McCain was trying to rebound his own missed shot when he was knocked to the floor by two Nets players going for the ball. He appeared to hit his head on the court and showed signs of physical distress before being helped to the locker room.

“It was rough,” Sixers coach Nick Nurse said after the game. “He is going to the hospital to get checked out. He was having some trouble breathing there. I thought maybe he got the wind knocked out of him, but (I’m) not sure what was going on there. I’ve never quite seen one like that before, so let’s hope he is OK, and we’ll see what the report is from the hospital.”

McCain, 20, recorded nine points, seven rebounds and two assists in 23 minutes off the bench before leaving the game.

Philadelphia selected McCain with the 16th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft out of Duke, where he averaged 14.3 points and 5.0 rebounds last season.

The 76ers wrap up their preseason schedule on Friday night at Orlando and open the regular season at home against Milwaukee next Wednesday night.
