The Athletics designated veteran infielder Gio Urshela for assignment prior to Friday night’s game against the visiting Los Angeles Angels.
The A’s recalled third baseman Brett Harris from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move.
Urshela, 33, is batting .238 with 20 RBIs in 59 games this season, his first with the Athletics.
The 10-year veteran has played with eight teams and has a .270 career average with 73 homers and 352 RBIs in 851 games. His best season was in 2019 when he established career highs of a .314 batting average, 21 homers and 74 RBIs with the New York Yankees.
Harris, 27, was batting .282 with 12 homers and 39 RBIs in 59 games at Las Vegas this season.
Harris played 36 games for the Athletics last season and struggled with the bat. He hit just .146 and slugged .262 in 36 games, hitting three homers and driving in 12 runs.
The Athletics also claimed left-hander Jared Shuster off waivers from the Chicago White Sox. The club subsequently optioned Shuster to Las Vegas.
Shuster, 27, had an 8.04 ERA in 12 games (two starts) for the White Sox this season. Overall, he is 6-8 with a 5.27 ERA in 62 appearances (17 starts) over three seasons with the Atlanta Braves (2023) and White Sox (2024-25).
