GAME BREAKDOWN
KEY MATCHUP: The Kansas offense needs a consistent performance against a Texas Tech defense ranked last in the Big 12. The ability of RB Pooka Williams to get untracked early, with help from RB Khalil Herbert, could effectively slow the Red Raiders if the Jayhawks can milk the clock. That, however, has never been a priority for Kansas coach David Beaty, who have authority over play-calling after firing offensive coordinator Doug Meacham. Williams needs touches as the Jayhawks’ top threat.
DRAFT SLANT
–DT Daniel Wise can be an effective piece to the Kansas defense, even when blockers contain him to some extent with double teams. When that happens, it frees tacklers such as LB Joe Dineen and S Bryce Torneden to make plays. Wise has three sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss and is the Jayhawks’ top-rated draft prospect. His brother, Deatrich, plays defensive end for the New England Patriots.
ROSTER REPORT
–QB Miles Kendrick will be available for the Oct. 20 game at Texas Tech. Kendrick accompanied the Jayhawks on the Oct. 6 trip to West Virginia and dressed for the game but did not play. Kendrick, who has served as a backup, suffered an injured shoulder at Baylor on Sept. 29.
–S Mike Lee will also be available against Texas Tech after missing the West Virginia game with an undisclosed injury.
–S Ricky Thomas has missed the last three games after starting each of the first three games.
–WRs Quan Hampton and Evan Fairs missed the West Virginia game with injuries.
