Mike Norvell will take over as coach of the Seminoles, Florida State announced on Sunday.

No contract details were given.

“I’m humbled and honored for the opportunity to be the head coach at Florida State University, one of the iconic brands in college football,” Norvell said in a statement.

Norvell was coaching Memphis on Saturday afternoon when Florida State sent out an advisory that it would introduce its new coach at a noon Sunday press conference. The American Athletic Conference championship game against Cincinnati was in the third quarter.

After beating Cincinnati 29-24, Norvell’s 17th-ranked Tigers improved to 12-1. The 38-year-old finishes 38-15 in four seasons with the school, with at least eight wins in each season. Despite his success, Memphis went 0-3 in bowl games under Norvell.

He told reporters after the AAC Championship Game that he planned to coach Memphis in its bowl game.

“I am so pleased that Coach Norvell will be leading our football program,” said Florida State president John Thrasher. “Everyone we spoke with regarding Coach Norvell agreed that he is one of the top coaches in the country.”

Florida State went 6-6 in the regular season with Willie Taggart (4-5) and interim leader Odell Haggins (2-1) coaching the team. Taggart was fired in early November after being a disappointing 9-12 in less than two seasons.
