Astros’ Yordan Alvarez, Jeremy Pena exit after collision

Houston Astros left fielder Yordan Alvarez and shortstop Jeremy Pena both exited the team’s game against the host New York Mets and were being evaluated for concussions after colliding in the eighth inning on Wednesday.

Astros manager Dusty Baker said after his team’s 2-0 win that there wasn’t an injury timetable for either player.

“They’re getting further evaluation on a number of things,” Baker said. “Just don’t want to jump to conclusions yet. It looked bad. Anybody that’s played out there has had a collision.”

The players crashed into each other on a fly ball to shallow left field hit by Dominic Smith.

Pena made the catch while being hit in the face and also hit Alvarez in the face during the collision. Alvarez remained on the ground for several minutes but was able to stand on his own power before exiting the field on a medical cart.

“Pena said he was OK, of course,” Baker said. “Yordan wanted to stay in the game, but Yordan is not a guy you pick to run into. And neither is Pena. Both of them are well built, but they’re built differently. But strong.”

Chas McCormick replaced Alvarez in left while Mauricio Dubon took over for Pena at shortstop.

Alvarez was 0-for-3 with a walk while Pena was 1-for-4. Alvarez entered the day tied for second in the majors with 23 home runs.

Overall, Alvarez is batting .316 with 56 RBIs in 67 games. Pena, a rookie, is batting .275 with nine and 27 RBIs in 57 games.
