The Green Bay Packers are releasing linebacker Jaylon Smith after just two games with the team, ESPN reported Tuesday.
The Packers signed the 26-year-old veteran on Oct. 7, one day after he was released by the Dallas Cowboys in a surprising move.
Smith played just 17 defensive snaps against Chicago in Week 7 and 10 snaps with one tackle against Washington in Week 8. He was a healthy scratch last Thursday night when the Packers (7-1) defeated Arizona, 24-21, for their seventh straight victory.
Smith signed a five-year, $64 million extension with the Cowboys before the start of the 2019 season.
He started two of the Cowboys’ first four games this season and totaled 18 tackles. With Dallas opting for Keanu Neal and rookie Micah Parsons at linebacker in the season opener, his streak of 50 consecutive starts (including playoff games) ended.
Smith was the Cowboys’ second-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft and quickly worked his way into a starting role. The 2019 Pro Bowl selection has 517 tackles, nine sacks, six forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and two interceptions in 70 career games (56 starts).
