Arizona Diamondbacks right fielder Kole Calhoun was placed on the 10-day injured list with a strained left hamstring prior to Thursday night’s home game against the San Diego Padres.
Calhoun was injured while running the bases during the second inning of Wednesday’s loss against the San Francisco Giants.
It is the second time Calhoun has injured the left hamstring this season. The first time was in late April and he underwent surgery and missed 2 1/2 months.
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said the belief is the latest injury won’t be as troublesome as the early season ailment.
“Everyone is fairly encouraged that it was not more serious than it was,” Lovullo told reporters. “The last injury, I don’t think it was similar in any way. This is a different area, different muscle.”
The 33-year-old Calhoun came off the IL on July 10 and was batting just .207 (17-for-82) with one homer and five RBIs since.
Overall, Calhoun is batting just .238 with three homers and 10 RBIs in 36 games this season.
Arizona recalled infielder Jake Hager from Triple-A Reno. Hager, 28, recently went 2-for-16 (.125) with one RBI and 10 strikeouts in six games with Arizona before being optioned to Reno after Sunday’s loss to the Padres.
