New Orleans Saints Pro Bowl kicker Wil Lutz announced Monday that he will undergo surgery.
Multiple outlets reported it’s a core muscle injury.
“Unfortunately, I found out that my training camp will be cut short due to an injury that had progressively worsened,” Lutz tweeted. “… We’ve decided it’s in our best interest to get this fixed now in order to miss the least amount of time possible.”
It’s expected Lutz will miss eight to 12 weeks. The typical recovery time from surgery is eight weeks but longer for kickers, per the reports.
Lutz, 27, has been dealing with a groin injury and left Saturday’s practice early.
Lutz made the Pro Bowl after the 2019 season. He has played in all 80 games since joining the Saints in 2016.
Lutz connected on 23 of 28 fields goals in 2020, the lowest percentage (82.1) of his career. He did make 57 of 58 extra points. Lutz led the NFL in extra points and attempts in 2017, hitting 47 of 50. He made 88.9 percent of his field goal attempts in 2019, including a long of 58 yards.
