Mariners acquire INF/OF Wyatt Mathisen from Rays

The Seattle Mariners acquired utility man Wyatt Mathisen from the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday for cash considerations.

Mathisen, 27, was designated for assignment by Tampa Bay on Tuesday after failing to play in a game for the team. He was acquired by the Rays on May 16 from the Arizona Diamondbacks, with whom he batted just .119 with one home run and eight RBIs in 23 games this season.

Mathisen’s roster spot with the Rays was filed by top infield prospect Wander Franco.

The Mariners also recalled right-hander Keynan Middleton from Triple-A Tacoma, while left-hander Daniel Zamora was designated for assignment and right-hander Vinny Nittoli was optioned to Triple-A.

Middleton, 27, posted a 4.42 ERA in 19 relief appearances for Seattle earlier this season.

Zamora, 28, was 2-0 with a 6.23 ERA in four relief appearances for the Mariners this season.

Nittoli, 30, gave up two earned runs in one inning during his major league debut Wednesday.
