The Detroit Tigers made a flurry of roster moves, including activating right-handed pitcher Jose Urena in time to start Sunday’s game against the Chicago White Sox.
He had been sidelined with a right forearm strain he sustained in a game May 26 against the Cleveland Indians.
Additionally, the team put right-hander Michael Fulmer on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 3, with a right shoulder strain; selected the contract of right-handed reliever Jason Foley from Triple-A Toledo; and designated outfielder JaCoby Jones for assignment.
On the season, Urena is 2-4 with a 4.14 ERA in 10 starts. Walks have been a problem as Urena, 29, has issued 22 of them in 54 1/3 innings.
Fulmer, 28, has been both a spot starter and a closer for Detroit. In 20 games (four starts), Fulmer is 4-3 with a 3.34 ERA, and he’s converted four of five save opportunities. He has struck out 35 and walked 10 in 35 innings.
Foley, 25, will be making his major-league debut when manager AJ Hinch calls him in from the bullpen. In nine games at Toledo, he pitched 10 innings and gave up four runs on 10 hits and four walks for a 3.60 ERA. He struck out 10.
The Tigers optioned Jones, 29, to Toledo on May 24 and designated him for assignment Sunday to make room on the 40-man roster for Foley. In 36 games before his demotion, Jones was batting .170 (17-for-100) with two home runs and nine RBIs with 42 strikeouts.
In six seasons in Detroit, he appeared in 352 games and hit .212 with 32 home runs, 98 RBIs and 389 strikeouts.
