The Chicago Bears announced Thursday that they have agreed to a three-year contract extension with kicker Cairo Santos.
The Chicago Tribune reported that Santos would earn at least $9 million and up to 11 million over the three seasons.
Multiple outlets reported that the deal actually extends through five seasons at $16 million. The Chicago Tribune reported that the final two seasons are voidable and set up to help with the team’s salary cap.
Santos, 29, was superb last season when he set a franchise record of 27 consecutive field goals, one better than the mark previously set by Robbie Gould in 2006.
Overall, Santos was 30 of 32 on field-goal attempts and scored 126 points in his first season in Chicago. His 93.8 percent field-goal rate also set a franchise single-season record.
It marked the third time Santos kicked 30 field goals in a season. He booted a career-best 31 for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016.
Overall, Santos is made 138 of 166 field goals (83.1 percent) in seven NFL seasons. He also played in two games for the Bears in 2017 as well as kicking for the Chiefs (2014-17), Los Angeles Rams (2018), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2018) and Tennessee Titans (2019).
