Report: Zimmerman plans to return in 2021

Ryan Zimmerman plans to return to baseball in 2021 after opting out of last season because of COVID-19 concerns, the Washington Post reported.

Zimmerman, 36, is a free agent but the first baseman is expected to try to re-sign with the Washington Nationals, where he has spent his entire 15-year career.

The two-time All-Star took on a reduced role in recent seasons, hitting .257 with six home runs and 27 RBIs in 52 games for the World Series champions in 2019.

Zimmerman is a career .279 hitter with 270 homers and 1,015 RBIs in 1,689 games. He is the franchise leader in hits, home runs and RBIs, and he is 79 games shy of surpassing Tim Wallach for the most games played in franchise history.
