Tight end Grant Calcaterra announced he’s returning to college football and will play at Auburn next season, a year after multiple concussions led him to retire.
Calcaterra was in his junior season at Oklahoma when he left the program on Nov. 22, 2019. As a graduate transfer, he’ll be eligible to play his final season immediately in 2021.
“A year ago, I would’ve never pictured my life the way is it now,” Calcaterra wrote on Twitter on Wednesday night, accompanying a photo of himself in an Auburn uniform. “I don’t believe in bad situations, just opportunities for growth. I’m more than grateful for this past year, but even more excited for my future challenges. Thanks again Sooner Nation. #WarEagle”
He was a four-star prospect and the nation’s No. 6 tight end when he committed to the Sooners’ Class of 2017, according to the 247Sports composite. He last played on Oct. 5, 2019.
Calcaterra was an All-Big 12 First Team selection in 2018 when he caught 26 passes for 396 yards (15.2 per catch) and six touchdowns.
In five games in 2019, he had five receptions for 79 yards. He ended his Sooners’ career with 41 catches for 637 yards and nine touchdowns.
