Giants WR Tate injures knee in practice

New York Giants wide receiver Golden Tate sustained a knee injury late in Thursday’s practice.

He was added to the team’s injury report as a limited participant. Further details were not immediately available.

Tate was benched for last week’s game against the Washington Football Team and is now in danger of missing another key NFC East game Sunday when the Giants (2-7) host the Philadelphia Eagles (3-4-1).

Tate did not travel with the team to Washington, a direct response to his behavior during a Monday night loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 8.

Tate, 32, didn’t catch his first pass against the Bucs until the fourth quarter and reportedly yelled “throw me the damn ball” at the Giants’ sideline. Later, he made a touchdown grab to pull New York within two and screamed “throw me the ball!” into an ESPN camera.

Tate also engaged in a few other outbursts in which he was jumping up and down or waving his hands to display his frustration when he felt he was open and the ball didn’t come his way.

Tate has 22 receptions for 226 yards and two touchdowns in seven games this season. The 11-year veteran has 682 catches for 8,116 yards and 46 scores in 155 career games (112 starts) with the Seahawks, Lions, Eagles and Giants.

The Giants signed Tate to a four-year, $37.5 million contract — $22.95 million of it guaranteed — in March 2019.

Also limited in Thursday’s practice were running back Devonta Freeman (ankle) and wideout Sterling Shepard (toe/hip). Tight end Kaden Smith returned from the concussion protocol and was a full participant.

Freeman aggravated the ankle injury Thursday but still hopes to play Sunday, NFL Network reported.
