The Big Ten on Monday suspended Maryland junior wide receiver Stefon Diggs for one game for his “actions toward officials and opposing players” before Maryland’s 20-19 win against Penn State on Saturday.
The Big Ten also fined Maryland $10,000 and reprimanded coach Randy Edsall for the Terrapins’ behavior.
Maryland team captains refused to shake hands with Penn State’s captains during the pregame coin toss, and then the teams got into a shoving match.
Diggs, Maryland’s leading receiver and one of its captains, was penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct. He likely was suspended for making physical contact with an official during the incident.
Edsall apologized for his players’ behavior after the game.
Diggs, who has 52 catches for 654 yards and five touchdowns, will sit out Maryland’s game against Michigan State on Nov. 15. The Terrapins have a bye this week.
