Zac Henderson, an All-America safety at Oklahoma and a starter on the Sooners’ 1974 national championship team, died at age 64.
Henderson, who remains the all-time leading tackler among Sooners defensive backs, died early Monday at his home in Oklahoma City. No cause of death was reported. His 15 career interceptions rank fourth all time at Oklahoma.
“He was a great player,” Barry Switzer, Henderson’s college coach, told the Oklahoman newspaper. “He’d jump right to the top right away.”
Henderson played in 12 games for the Philadelphia Eagles in 1980. He also played four seasons in the Canadian Football League, for the Hamilton Tigers-Cats (1978-7) and the Toronto Argonauts (1982-83).
Henderson is the namesake of Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor, whose father, Sherwood, was Henderson’s teammate at Oklahoma.
