The Baltimore Ravens set a record for rushing yards in a single season in Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, surpassing the 1978 New England Patriots.
Gus Edwards’ 9-yard carry early in the second quarter gave the Ravens 99 rushing yards in the game, bringing their season total to 3,172. The Patriots’ mark, which stood for 41 years, was 3,165.
Baltimore broke the record despite its top two rushers on the season being inactive on Sunday. Quarterback Lamar Jackson (rest) finished with 1,206 yards — a single-season quarterback record — on 176 carries, and Mark Ingram (calf) had 1,018 yards on 202 carries.
Edwards entered the day third on that list with 581 yards on 112 carries, and Justice Hill was fourth with 186 yards on 48 carries.
The 1978 Patriots, oddly enough, didn’t have a single rusher gain more than 800 yards that year. They were led by fullback Sam Cunningham (768), followed by running backs Horace Ivory (693) and Andy Johnson (675).
Entering the game, the Ravens had locked up the No. 1 seed in the AFC and home-field advantage throughout the conference playoffs.
