The Cincinnati Reds activated catcher Devin Mesoraco from the 15-day disabled list on Monday.
The club said it expects Mesoraco to do most of the catching this season but he is not in Monday’s starting lineup against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Mesoraco was out with an injured side. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, the Reds optioned catcher Tucker Barnhart to Triple-A Louisville. He went 2-for-8 in three games.
Manager Bryan Price said Bryan Pena got Monday’s start to catch right-hander Tony Cingrani because the two worked well together in Cingrani’s last start.
Price also said the club expects to activate reliever Jonathan Broxton from the DL during the series with St. Louis. He has been out with a forearm injury. It was reported over the weekend that Broxton would be activated Tuesday and take over as closer until Aroldis Chapman returns from injury.
