The Tennessee Titans plan to activate first-round pick Jeffery Simmons and release defensive end Brent Urban, according to multiple media outlets on Saturday.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Simmons will be activated after the defensive tackle has spent the week practicing with the team. Simmons, who sustained a torn ACL in February, was selected by the Titans with the 19th overall pick in the 2019 draft out of Mississippi State.
“I am excited to get out there and play football again,” Simmons told reporters earlier this week. “I am ready. I feel ready, my body is feeling good, my knee is feeling good – that’s the main thing. So right now I just want to get out there, see how comfortable I am with it and go from there.”
NFL rules allow players to begin practicing with the team after Week 6. Simmons will be placed on the 53-man roster when he is ready to play for the Titans (2-4), who host the Los Angeles Chargers (2-4) on Sunday (4:05 p.m. ET).
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Titans were parting ways with Urban, who started all 16 games in 2018 for the Baltimore Ravens before signing a one-year, $1.3 million contract with Tennessee in the offseason.
The Titans’ reported decision to move on from Urban will cost the Ravens a fourth-round compensatory pick next year, as the 28-year-old will have been released prior to Week 10.
Urban did not record any statistics despite playing in four of Tennessee’s first six games this season.
The 6-foot-7, 300-pound Urban collected 52 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 45 career games with the Ravens and Titans.
