Tigers notch baseball’s biggest upset in 15 years

The Detroit Tigers pulled off baseball’s biggest upset in at least 15 years on Wednesday.

The host Houston Astros, with ace Justin Verlander on the mound, were a -500 to -550 favorite over the Tigers at Las Vegas sportsbooks, according to ESPN.com, but Detroit pulled out a 2-1 win.

The Tigers began the game with odds of +400 to +425.

Per ESPN.com, the biggest baseball favorite in recent years was the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016, when they were -485 for a game they won against the Atlanta Braves.

The Astros lost 8-7 on the road to the Baltimore Orioles on Aug. 12 when they were -460 favorites, again with Verlander on the mound.

Verlander threw a complete-game two-hitter Wednesday, striking out 11 without issuing a walk, but he lost thanks to yielding solo homers to Ronny Rodriguez in the fifth inning and John Hicks in the ninth.
