Red Sox call up INF Owings from Triple-A

The Boston Red Sox selected the contract of veteran infielder Chris Owings from Triple-A Pawtucket ahead of Sunday’s home game against the Los Angeles Angels.

Owings, 27, signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox on June 17 after being released earlier that month by the Kansas City Royals.

Owings was in Sunday’s starting lineup, playing second base and leading off with Mookie Betts getting the day off.

Owings batted .133 with two homers and nine RBIs in 40 games with Kansas City this season. He turned things around at Pawtucket, batting .325 with 11 homers and 34 RBIs in 44 games.

He is a career .242 hitter with 33 home runs, 205 RBIs and 74 stolen bases in parts of seven seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks (2013-18) and Royals.

To make room on the roster, Boston sent 30-year-old right-hander Hector Velazquez (1-4, 5.81 ERA) to Pawtucket and transferred first baseman Steve Pearce (back, knee) to the 60-day injured list.
