White Sox send Covey to Triple-A after rocky outing

The Chicago White Sox optioned right-handed pitcher Dylan Covey to Triple-A Charlotte following his outing Sunday afternoon against the Minnesota Twins.

Covey, 27, dropped to 1-7 on the season with the 11-1 loss to the Twins. He has a 6.99 ERA in 14 games (10 starts) pitched, giving up 32 earned runs in 47 2/3 innings.

The White Sox said they would make a corresponding roster move before Tuesday night’s series opener against the New York Mets.

The Twins scored five runs in the first inning Sunday against Covey, who was pulled after throwing just 14 pitches and failing to get an out. The White Sox lost 11-1.

Covey’s outing marked just the second time this season that an MLB starting pitcher departed without registering an out. The other came on April 16 at Philadelphia when Steven Matz of the Mets left after allowing eight runs in New York’s 14-3 loss.
