Arizona Diamondbacks closer Greg Holland will move out of that role, at least for now, manager Torey Lovullo said Sunday.
“I’ve explained to (Holland) that I want it to be a temporary thing,” Lovullo said. “I talked to several people that I trust inside of this clubhouse and tried to get as much information as I could before I made an emotional or hasty decision, and I feel like this is the best thing for the team and the best thing for him right now.”
Against the Marlins on Friday night, the Diamondbacks had a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning before Holland allowed two runs, leading to a 3-2 loss. It was the third blown save in the past eight opportunities for the 33-year-old right-hander.
In July, Holland has thrown 6 1/3 innings, giving up six runs. On the month, his record is 0-2 with an 8.53 ERA.
For the season, Holland is 1-2 with a 3.51 ERA. He has appeared in 37 games and has 17 saves in 22 chances.
Luvollo is expected to move to a committee approach, using right-handers Yoan Lopez, Yoshihisa Hirano and Archie Bradley, as well as left-hander Andrew Chafin.
“We’re just going to give (Holland) a little bit of a breather and have him go out in perhaps a different inning, collect some big outs and get on a roll and find his way back into that closer’s situation,” Lovullo said.
