The Detroit Tigers placed outfielder JaCoby Jones on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a lower back strain and recalled outfielder Victor Reyes from Triple-A Toledo.
Jones left the first game of Wednesday’s day-night doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox in the fifth inning with back spasms. He underwent an MRI that showed no serious injury.
The 27-year-old Jones was batting .244 with nine home runs and 23 RBIs in 69 games this season. He is a career .211 hitter over four seasons (267 games) with 23 home runs and 72 RBIs.
Reyes, 24, played in five games with the Tigers earlier this season, going 2-for-8 with an RBI. He has played in 105 career games over the past two seasons, batting .223 with one home run and 13 RBIs.
In another move Thursday, the Tigers returned left-hander Tyler Alexander to Toledo. As the extra 26th man for Wednesday’s doubleheader, Alexander, 24, made his major league debut as the starter of the second game, giving up two runs on five hits over five innings and leaving without a decision.
