The St. Louis Cardinals recalled right-hander Daniel Ponce de Leon from Triple-A Memphis and optioned right-hander Ryan Helsley to the Redbirds on Sunday.
De Leon, 27, is expected to start Monday in the opener of a three-game road series against the Miami Marlins.
In his only previous appearance for St. Louis this season, de Leon allowed one run on two hits and struck out seven in the Cardinals’ 4-3 victory against the Milwaukee Brewers on April 23.
In 11 starts at Memphis, he is 4-4 with a 3.90 ERA with 47 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings.
Helsley, a 24-year-old rookie, has appeared in six games out of the St. Louis bullpen. He has a 2.70 ERA with 11 strikeouts in 10 innings.
