New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton was scratched from the lineup of a scheduled rehab game Tuesday with a strained calf.
The Yankees announced Wednesday that Stanton was experiencing left calf tightness. The short-term plan is to pause his rehab assignment until he’s ready to resume.
Stanton will return to New York from Tampa, Fla., effectively ending the rehab stint, which can be restarted following testing.
Stanton last played March 31 due to a left biceps strain. He then suffered a left shoulder strain. He has played in three games this season as the Yankees continue to be decimated by injuries.
With Stanton sidelined, Clint Frazier is expected to remain in the lineup as a regular right fielder until Stanton returns.
Manager Aaron Boone said earlier this week he believed Stanton could be back next week. That timeline is now scrapped as the Yankees assess the latest injury.
Stanton hit .266 with 38 home runs and 100 RBIs in his first season with the Yankees in 2018.
