Cincinnati Reds right-handed reliever Jonathan Broxton will need six months to recover from a flexor mass strain in his right forearm, MLB.com reported Friday.

Broxton had surgery, which was performed by Dr. Tim Kremchek.

The Reds placed Broxton on the 15-day disabled list Thursday.

Broxton left Wednesday’s 10-7 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks after facing two batters in the eighth inning. He had appeared in five games since coming off the DL on Aug. 7 with a strained right elbow. He was on the DL for nearly two months.

Broxton, who is in the first year of a three-year, $21-million deal, went 2-2 with a 4.11 ERA over 30 2/3 innings this season.
